Preparing for 2nd Diary

I've been thinking a bit about the next diary. These are the things I think I'd like to see in it:

About mediaKos "membership": To each according to his/her ability, interest and time.
  • Non-diarists: help us get the word out when we launch it (twitter, letting Kossack diarists know about using the tag)
  • Diarists: If you happen to write a media-related diary and it fits the mediaKos tag criteria, please use the tag.
  • If you want to spearhead or work with a sub-group on a specific topic, do it!
  • If you work with any organization/blog that works on media issues already, we want to work with you.
  • If you happen to have a handy database of media (MSM + blogs) contact info, send it to ParkRanger
What else?

Also I want to know what you think of having criteria for using the mediaKos tag -
yes or no?
If so:
  • Must include action item? Yes or no?
  • I would hope all mediaKos diaries would be well-sourced and factual but how do we make that subjective criterion objective? Who gets to decide that? Tricky...
  • Other ideas?

Lastly, I'd like to suggest the idea of mediaKos subgroups that could tie in with the weekly community series topics with tremendous potential for cross-posting and working with existing blogs/bloggers/Kossacks, e.g.:
  • Media accountability, fact-checking
  • Mass media and propaganda
  • How to shut down or counter hate radio (e.g., I know certainot is very passionate about this, but not certain he/she writes diaries)
  • Attack on Fox News, News Corps & Rupert Murdoch
  1. KingOneEye does this all the time anyway, as do so many others (who?)
  2. Rupert Murdoch's Psychological Terrorism on America (I'll do a diary, at least)
  3. Unenergy's proposal to map Murdoch's empire and havoc-wreaking; try to figure out a subversive way to get the word out to wingnuts that Fox is owned by foreigners with an agenda: Saudis and Murdoch... etc.
So, those are my suggestions and questions. What do you think?

  6. Thanks eKos! We'll definitely want a widget. Angie is going to make a logo.

This is my first blog and I'm a bit impulsive so I just threw it up there to get going. I'm sure we'll change the design and add gadgets, RSS feeds, whatever as we go - again, I'm a beginner so I hope to see some suggestions from others :-)

  7. To eKos

Thanks for the info. Is there a button or do you have to type out the code for link each time?

Also, I can't paste link from 'Page'. The Comment box disappears.

    Thanks.

  8. well, it looks like for comments on blogger you have to type out the code. For blog posts, they have a 'what you see is what you get' editor that doesn't require any coding.

When you say you will want a widget... do you mean for DK or for blogger? Blogger has some 'gadgets' you can add pretty easily to the sidebar, including an RSS widget. I can tell you how to set that up for mediakos. I had to design one for eKos on DK and host it on a server. It was not quite so straightforward. But now that I think I know what I'm doing, I could tell you how I set ours up. I could also change it's color scheme and alter the code so that it grabbed mediaKos diaries. It really just depends on what you want.

  10. Hi everyone!

I've noticed that part of the success of ekos is that they utilized this tag on all content which fit its mission statement, regardless of whether the diarist was a participant to the effort. I've never seen a diarist object, as people are generally happy to contribute to benign and organized efforts. So, for example, a diary such as adept2u's, which highlighted Howard Dean's appearance on Fox in order to deconstruct one of their smears, could be tagged "mediaKos." (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/7/25/887372/-Dr.-Howard-Dean-Destroys-Fox!-Thats-What-Im-Talking-About!) Most people are not going to have any problems whatsoever with the addition of this tag to their works, and it would help build volume very quickly.

    Thoughts?

  11. ParkRanger here.

SLSF, would you post about how we are to work with you in blogger? If we are just followers, I don't believe that gives us any way to interact other than make comments.

There is a way in blogger that we can all be team members and could create posts on topics. For example, a post on media resources. If we have one post with running comments like this talking about different topics then we end up with the same problem we had with your DKos diary -- how to organize the information.

Catte Nappe said she already had a database of media resources so I would be happy to work with her to add more.

    Here's the blogger team FAQ:

How do I create a team blog

If my code doesn't work, then the URL is

    http://www.google.com/support/blogger/bin//support/blogger/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=41440

This is an excellent diary proposing truth in journalism by having journalists subscribe to a code of ethics in an organization 100 years old, The Society of Professional Journalism. The title is strange, but the diary is about journalism.

How Obama can change the tone and defend democracy

Again, if my link doesn't work then here is the URL:

  12. Park Ranger, that diary link is such an excellent candidate for the MediaKos tag. I think that diaries of that type, regardless of whether the diarist is a member of MediaKos, should be tagged (with the permission of the diarist, of course).

  14. I fully endorse the requirement for some kind of action recommendation. It tracks with soemthing I do in connection with a community education program I present - it's not enough to be awakened to an issue and all agree that "gee, ain't it awful". Closure requires some committment to do something useful about the problem.

I also agree with many commenters that, with diarist's permission, the mediaKos tag should be offered to any appropriate diary - even if the author is not (currently) a "member" of the group. As some have noted, this is how eKos proceeded, and it impressed me greatly.

As to that tricky question of what is an appropriate diary - well, that's one of those examples of the devil being in the details. Looking to our big brother/sister mentors at eKos - have they ever faced this issue? Say some sort of CT or climate change denial post that "technically" is environment related but does not represent the mission well? Or something using questionable sources? I would, think though, that a first step must be a clear mission statement to guide us.

  15. Catte, I agree that a mission statement needs to be created. From what I've understood so far through the supportive comments in the first Diary, there appears to be a strong current of anger, specifically with the RW media and specifically with FauxNews.

Would we be committing to responding to the daily barrage of misinformation, lies and slander or would we be looking for solutions to the problem.

I'd like to suggest that at some point we categorize the types of media, i.e., print, MSM, cable, radio, online, etc. Clearly the format and audience are different and each would require a specific kind of analysis.

  16. Hi All. Angie here.

I need some ideas on WHAT sort of image we want for the logo.

When I did the logo for eKos, it was easy. Ecology=Environment=Earth + Green

So far as I can tell, we're starting our own, local version of "Rapid Response & Media Watchdog" all in one.

So the theme then would be:
    Validation of facts
Refutation of mistakes, lies and misnomers
Call out on TradMed (traditional media) misses
    Fact check on emerging stories/issues/events

Ideas, thoughts, response to my assumption of what we're building?

For me, the image that is coming to mind is something like the Red & White of Emergency Responders (Ambulance, Fire Rescue, etc).

Something with tones of assistance AND investigation.

Not guard dog, but search/rescue dogs?

Again, just throwing some ideas out.

I'll check later today for any response, and I might start doodling in the meanwhile.

    cheers!

    angie

  17. oh - and by the by, I was totally wrong about thinking that we should use mKos.

People would have thought we were writing about birds (m caws = macaws) haha.

You all were right to go with the mediaKos label!

  18. Not sure if you all are still checking this thread, but I've finished a couple of projects for eKos over the last week. We have a new Flash RSS widget that I put together from scratch and which I am hosting on a free domain. I also put together a website that allows one to create pretty HTML tables using RSS and Google Reader feeds. If you would like to see this stuff, send me an e-mail. I'm not at all protective of the code, and would help you in configuring it to suit your needs.

All I ask is that anyone with programming experience not laugh at my code. This was my first adventure in several different programming languages (and object-oriented programming in general), so some of it is a little clunky. Honestly, there are a number of things I would have done differently if I had to do it again (much more server-side scripting), but at this point everything works, so I'm not going to mess with it.
